MUD & LAUNDRY ROOM - Design & Project Management
This historic home had a small covered porch off the kitchen, sitting on a full foundation that tied into the rest of the basement. Best way to fix this odd condition? Make it an adorable mudroom!
Even though the square footage was small, the impact of enclosing the existing porch was big! The mudroom improved the flow of the home from the kitchen into the backyard. Instead of walking directly into the small kitchen, a landing spot for shoes & dog leashes & gardening hats was created.
With some clever planning, the stacking washer/dryer was also relocated into the new mudroom. It had originally lived under the stairs, where access was difficult & elbows were constantly being bumped. Freeing up the under-the-stair space also gave this home it’s only first floor closet - a new walk-in space for coats, shoes, and even the vacuum!
The mudroom palette was inspired by the sunrise & sunset. The morning sun spills into the space, and is visible from the owner’s morning-coffee perch within the home. Soft warm hues amplify the dawn and dusk light, creating a warm and inviting space.
